Specific Phobia
Specific Phobia is excessive fear of an object or situation. Adults usually recognize that their fear is inappropriate but they cannot control their response. The feared situation will be avoided at all costs or anticipated with dread. Diagnosis involves an interference with or functioning in daily life or if the fear is significantly disturbing to the individual.
Examples:
- Fear of flying
- Fear of a specific animal like dogs, spiders, snakes or insects
- Fear of a shopping mall
If an individual's phobia is the result of a childhood trauma it may disappear as the person ages.
